I got to try out BQM Diner today, a new burger joint on Queen St. that was recommended to me by a friend. There’s a wave of burger restaurants opening up here lately, which I don’t really have a problem with since it’s one of my favourite foods. Another popular style of restaurant cropping up lately is the Poutineri, but I don’t eat that shit.
I ordered the normal burger which comes with garlic aoli mayo, pickles, tomato, lettuce/greens and red onion. I threw in a bowl of fries on top because it’s Sunday, and I can.
The food came out not too long after and looked like the photo below. Except better, because we don’t see things in iPhone quality. The garlic mayo was completely slathered over the top bun. I would tell you to take the knife and wipe half of that off, but you have to practise what you preach, so I can’t tell you to do that. As long as my friends will sit by my bedside after double-bypass surgery, I have the strength to move forward with these decisions in life.

I added ketchup, a bit of mustard and off to the races I went. On first bite I found the burger to taste rather bitter. I realized that the lettuce was the kind you get in the plastic bin at the grocery store – organic greens. This is not my favourite kind of lettuce for a burger.
The garlic mayo was quite pungent, to the point that I think it was also contributing to the aforementioned bitter taste. And finally, it tasted charred. The bun was simply burnt.
I ordered the burger medium-well, but the centre was completely red. I would call that medium-rare. The fries were quite good, as they had a nice seasoning on them.
The restaurant had a nice character, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. But the burger didn’t taste very good, and was not cooked the way I ordered it.
Have you been here? What did you think?
