XLR8R Podcast: Egyptrixx

Tuesday April 27, 2010

I was very excited to see Toronto’s own has been featured on the XLR8R podcast. Dave has had many successes lately with various releases and tour dates, but something like being featured on the XLR8R podcast strikes a big chord with me. Congratulations man!

“Any XLR8R reader with a pulse has probably noticed our unabashed affinity for the Night Slugs camp and all it has done to energize London dance music. In recent months, its reach has extended well beyond the English capital, even into the snowy wilds of Canada, as Toronto-based producer Egyptrixx was tapped for the second Night Slugs release. Yet Egyptrixx (a.k.a.David Psutka) has been fiddling with beats for years; as this exclusive mix—which happens to be packed with unreleased and unsigned selections—shows, Psutka’s knowledge runs deep, allowing him to thoughtfully pull from house, techno, dubstep, UK funky, and whatever other genres he needs (gothy drone rock, anyone?) to create a unique sound that he likes to refer to as “celestial club music.” With appearances booked across Europe and North America this summer, Egyptrixx is poised to take a whole lot of clubbers much deeper than they’re accustomed to going”

01 Egyptrixx “Start from the Beginning”
02 Audion “Push” (Spectral Sound)
03 Egyptrixx “Bible Eyes”
04 Art Nouveau “Paradise”
05 Brodinski “Arnold Classics (Egyptrixx RMX)” (Grizzly)
06 Actress “Ivy May Gilpin” (Werk Discs)
07 Brackles “6am El Gordos” (Brainmath)
08 Ramadanman “Glut” (Hemlock)
09 Untold “Anaconda (Guarachero Refix)”
10 Terror Danjah “Air Bubble (Starkey Remix)” (Butterz)
11 Sigha “Rawwww” (Hotflush)
12 Trust “Trinity”
13 Warning “Magic Castle” (Vertigo)h3.

Primus Luta - Vanguard Series IV

It’s Tuesday, so I went hunting around for another mix for you. Percussionlab was the spot again as I found this cool set by Primus Luta. There are four volumes which you can listen to here.

“To borrow from Me’Shell NdegéOcello, this is an anthropological mix, compiled at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The goal was to capture the changing sound of music. A change that draws no lines of division. It is bound to no genre, no social group, global not regional. In a constant state of flux, it will only continue to evolve and grow. All of these mixes were done live using the custom application ‘scrtch’ developed in Plogue Bidule for the Monome and Stribe Duo.”

Dark Side of the Tunes

Here’s the first Live P.A. i’ve done in six years (or more). It was recorded last month at Proper Sundays, a small party on a Sunday afternoon above the Proper Reserve clothing store on Queen St. W. in Toronto.

For half the set I did a live remix of the Dark Side of the Moon album by Pink Floyd. I chose Dark Side because it was a way to give me some direction with using the live set system I have been building over the past year.

I used a Novation Launchpad a Korg NanoKontrol to work with Ableton Live. Over the course of about a day, I went in to all the tracks on the album and warped or chopped them up. Then I added some of my own keyboard parts to complete the tracks. Some of the tunes have about seven tracks running simultaneously.

Thanks to the Preacherman for recording the set that day!

DJ Psyence - Lab Sessions Volume 4 (Fuerza Chile)

DJ Psyence – Lab Sessions Vol 4 (Fuerza Chile) by djpsyence

Matt Soriano aka DJ Psyence, is a DJ here in Toronto who’s been putting out a string of nice and chilled out mixes this year with the Masso DJs project.

He writes, “I wanted to share some good vibes in tribute to Chile fighting through the devastation of the recent 8.8 earthquake that rocked much of the country on February 27, 2010, and the continuous disruptive aftershocks that still continue. This is fine underground House with an undertone of DEEP, tribal-splitting, drum-hittin’, percussion-fitting, ass-kicking elements. Fuerza Chile.”

Psyence also happens to run a design shop called EMéS. Keep it up Matt!

Here’s a mix by Limaçon from the Thoughtless Transmissions series. Lima’s debut full length, Tarry Not was released on the Toronto label earlier this year. I got to see him DJ at the Drake in celebration of the release and it was one of the best sets i’ve heard in 2010.

Preacherman - Cold Blue

Cold Blue by preacherman

Here’s the latest mix by Preacherman. Originally from New York City before arriving in Toronto, this guy is one of the hardest working DJs in the house movement here. His sets walk the lines between deep, disco, jackin’ and sometimes on the progressive tip too depending on the party. Enjoy this mix!
