My First Vinyl Arrived

Wednesday July 22, 2009

What a thrilling item to arrive in the mail! Today I got a copy of the first vinyl record i've been pressed on. Readers of the blog know about the remix I did for the Balkan Beat Box for a long time now, but it's even better that it ended up on vinyl here in North America.

At one time it would've been no sweat to have one of your tracks or a whole released pressed to wax, as it was the only way for a DJ to play your tune in a set. But these days it's not the case.

For my own releases I looked into doing some vinyl, but the costs didn't work out in any way. A local record store here in Toronto wasn't even interested in carrying it. DJs are frustrated that there is not much fresh vinyl these days, but there's more to the problem than just the artists and labels. How was I supposed to print anything if it wasn't even going to get carried at my store of choice?

After I rip my track I will probably frame this record. :)

Free Remix Pack!

Wednesday February 25, 2009

Posted in:

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Here's a package of a bunch of remixes that I did for various contests starting in and around the end of 2007. I like to enter the contests cause they're a lot of fun, but if I told you that I wasn't concerned with winning then I would be lying!

I, like many other people, get frustrated because I often feel like my remix isn't actually getting heard properly when I enter.

One time I lost a contest but later got included on the remixes album - that was for the Balkan Beat Box contest which ended up getting released on Crammed Disc. Something cool is happening with that album but I can't say anything more at this point.

Here are a list of remixes that are included in this package:

Carl Cox - I Want You - Beatportal

Sasha - Mongoose - Beatportal

First Choice - The Player - Traxsource (Two edits)

The Martin Brothers - Dum - Dancetracks Digital (Two edits)

Jazzanova - I Can See - Soundcloud

I would try to tell you what genres these are but they're all over the map from Deep to Tech to Micro House, and are made in my non-conformist nature of sticking it to the genre gods.

Jazzanova Remix Entry

Friday January 2, 2009

Posted in:

Hope everyone had a great new years! Just wanted to start off the new annum by posting this remix entry I did for the Jazzanova contest. The song is called “I Can See”, and it’s in conjunction with Soundcloud, a site that i’ve been experimenting with lately.

Unfortunately though, the service is fairly costly for a music sharing app, so we’ll see how long I last. The cool part is people can drop comments directly on your song, making it the ultimate tool for getting feedback and collaboration.

Anyways, the vocalist on this particular track is Ben Westbeech. A lot of people think he sounds very similar to Jason Kay from Jamiroquai. Although I agree they are slightly different. Also Westbeech collaborates with a lot of artists, whereas Jason Kay just did the Jamiroquai project really.

New Release: Froosh

Monday September 29, 2008

Posted in:

We present to you the debut release on Mr. Tunes’ new label(Auditory Music), entitled “Froosh”. This track is sort of a homage to the soul-jazz sound, and the remix takes it a step higher by adding elements of Electro and Acid synths.

Even though the alter-ego “Noodlebaum” heats things up a bit, he still keeps things true to the sound of the original version by adding another layer of faux-jazz keyboards in addition to the ripping synths.

You may purchase the song on Stompy, and then it should be up on another good store soon.

Martin Brothers Remix: Second Rinse

Sunday September 14, 2008

I decided to have another go at this remix because I wasn’t entirely pleased with my first entry.

This track is a real dousy to remix because it doesn’t have those key elements you’re used to with other remixes – like a killer lead hook or a cool vocal.

I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point of why they put this track up for surgery, because it’s more challenging this way and begs the entrants to be a bit more creative with their submissions. It’s also a good idea to not take the best track out of the EP(which is Rocket Surgery) and have the world(including myself) butcher it.

This remix of the track “Dum” is ok. Not sure how it will sit with the judges but I always hope for the best. If you’re wondering when i’ll stop entering contests, the answer is when I win one!

Here’s a snippet from the original:

First Anthem Challenge: Memories of Wendel

Tuesday August 26, 2008

Here’s my first entry to the CBC’s challenge for finding the new theme song to Hockey Night in Canada. I was totally ahead of the game by submitting my first entry like five days before the deadline(sigh), and I still have yet to do a few more. Anyone up for some coffee?

If you’re really dedicated you can rate and comment on the entry here

(If you’re reading this in Google Reader, it will play the wrong song, how embarrassing?)
